รากศัพท์
จากภาษากรีก rhodon แปลว่ากุหลาบ และ bakterion หมายถึงแท่ง ทั้งหมดหมายถึงสีของแบคทีเรียในอันดับนี้ที่เจริญเติบโตได้ในสภาวะที่มีออกซิเจนและสังเคราะห์แสงได้ โดยอาจมีสีชมพูหรือสีแดงเนื่องจากการสร้างแคโรทีนอยด์[4]
